Head of Information management

Steve Hellen joined the GICHD in January 2021.  As Head of Information Management (IM), he is responsible for maintaining a forward-looking vision for the division’s work and ensuring that the Centre remains at the cutting edge of IM developments relevant to the Mine Action sector.  This includes leading a team of IM experts to deliver capacity development and technical development programs to ensure that Mine Action actors are enabled to leverage information towards evidence-based operational and strategic decision-making.

Steve Hellen has over 20 years of information management experience.  Before joining GICHD, he was the Senior Director for Information Technology Field Systems at Catholic Relief Services.  He helped the organization integrate the latest digital tools into a variety of sectors including humanitarian response, agriculture, health, education, microfinance, peacebuilding, and water and sanitation. Earlier work includes a decade in technology leadership positions at Johns Hopkins University where he also served as a Lecturer for Geographic Information Systems and Geospatial Analysis.  He started his career at Accenture focused on technical architecture.

Steve Hellen holds a Masters in Environmental Science and Policy from Johns Hopkins University, a Bachelors in Engineering Science from Loyola University Maryland, and a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems from Pennsylvania State University.
