Webinar Details:

  • Date: 29 January 2025
  • Time: 2:00 PM (CET)
  • Topic: Integrated Explosive Ordnance Risk Education and Community First Aid Responder Training

The mortality rate for victims of explosive ordnance in low-resource conflict and post-conflict settings is many times higher than in military or high-resource civilian settings. These disparities are due to a range of factors including a lack of formal prehospital care systems. Community members have an important role in the initial first aid and initiation of movement to definitive care for individuals injured by explosive ordnance. Layperson first responder training leverages strategically identified local community members to provide lifesaving emergency care to the injured and initiate contact with health services. Layperson first responder trainings have previously been demonstrated to reduce trauma-related mortality in low-resource, landmine-contaminated regions of Iraq and Cambodia yet have not been widely scaled in regions affected by explosive ordnance.

This webinar will explore how the Explosive Weapons Trauma Care Collective (EXTRACCT) is partnering with mine action stakeholders to pilot integrated delivery of Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) and layperson first responder training in these communities. The session will shed light on the impact of this collaboration in regions affected by explosive ordnance, including improvised explosive devices.
