From an operational viewpoint, the efforts, notably in terms of finance, made by France are significant: total funding of €42.2m (excluding research) over the period 1995-2000; bilateral aid of over €3.779m in 2001-2002 and almost €4.2m in 2003-2004. To these latter amounts should be added not only France’s substantial contribution to the actions of the European Commission in this field (approxi-mately between 17% and 25% according to the instrument concerned), but also funding linked to other interventions on which it is difficult to put a precise figure (for example: interventions by the French Armed Forces and, in the context of multilateral cooperation, France’s voluntary contributions to the programmes of international organisations, especially the United Nations, of which it is a member, which contribute to mine action). On the ground, these efforts take the form of action to decontaminate infested sites, help in destroying stockpiles, assistance to victims and training in demining and decon-tamination techniques. In terms of geography, in recent years our action has been essentially concen-trated on those countries and regions that are most affected by this scourge: Cambodia, Mozambique, the Balkans and, from 2005, Angola.
