Antipersonnel landmines, along with other unexploded ordnance, litter the ground in more than 80 countries. Eliminating this threat will take massive resources unless we think of new ways to approach this problem. Our research aims to support humanitarian demining efforts with research into the needs of deminers working in countries such as Afghanistan and Cambodia, and to develop practical innovations which can improve effectiveness and safety. We found that many simple improvements shown here were never used in practice, even though they bring significant cost-benefit improvements. We learned that understanding engineering practice could provide answers....so we have focused our research since 2002 on this issue.
