GICHD Afghanistan Update

Over the years, Afghanistan and the GICHD have had a long history of cooperation in the field of mine action. The Centre, with its partners, has worked tirelessly to help strengthen Afghanistan's capacity in mine action by providing support in various areas such as strategic planning, information management and national standards.

The present situation in the country is impacting our support and we are monitoring developments closely. We hope to be able fully to assist the country again as soon as possible and to reduce, together with our partners, the humanitarian risks posed by the presence of explosive devices.

The current context, coupled with a large number of displaced persons, reminds us once again that the need for humanitarian action, including mine action, is undiminished and that continued efforts will be needed by local and national actors as well as the international community.
