This past week, from 10-13 May, the GICHD participated in the Forum of Experts for the Global Demining Initiative for Colombia. The Forum was jointly organised by the U.S. Department of State, PM/WRA, the American Embassy in Colombia, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Embassy, Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Colombian Dirección Contra Minas (DAICMA) and the GICHD.

Held in Bogotá, the Forum's purpose was to familiarize prospective donors with Colombia’s mine action sector, help them better understand the scope of the challenge, and learn about the different mechanisms by which Colombia may be supported in its efforts to become landmine free.

During the course of the Forum, delegates visited an active demining site to facilitate familiarization with opportunities and challenges associated with demining in Colombia. Presenters included representatives from the Colombian government and military demining units, nongovernmental organizations, and multinational institutions.

Addressing participants at the opening of the Forum, GICHD Director Stefano Toscano emphasized the strong contribution that such events have toward efficient and effective mine action. When the challenges faced by affected countries are better understood, then cooperation, coordination and inclusiveness can be fostered, he stated. Also speaking at the event, were GICHD Head of Operations, Guy Rhodes and Head of Risk Management Marc Bonnet.
