This week, during the 15th Meeting of States Parties to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (15MSP), the GICHD outlined three critical areas where it focuses operational support with regard to the Convention:
- Promotion of quality non-technical survey to define better contamination;
- Strategic planning incorporating residual risk as part of the land release process;
- Clarification on improvised landmines and how they relate to the Treaty and the International Mine Action Standards.
During the Clearance Segment of the 15MSP, Guy Rhodes, GICHD Director of Operations, emphasised that the Centre "continues to support countries in their efforts to clear anti-personnel landmines and to assist progress towards the collective completion goal of 2025."
The following day, at the GICHD side event "Mine Action Innovation in the Middle East," GICHD Director Stefano Toscano chaired an engaging event with four speakers who presented on current or developing tools and innovative approaches that are designed to deliver solutions for mine action activities in the region.
A second side event, co-hosted by the GICHD and the Mines Advisory Group on "Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and improvised landmines," explored current operational and policy challenges and solutions in the Middle East.
The 15MSP ran from 29 November to 1 December in Santiago, Chile.
