The GICHD will have the opportunity to exchange with other development and humanitarian organizations, governments, businesses and leaders at the World Humanitarian Summit, being held in Istanbul from 23-24 May.
Going into the Summit, the GICHD has pledged to uphold two commitments outlined by the Agenda for Humanity. The first is under Core responsibility 1, “To uphold the norms that safeguard humanity.” The Centre is characterising the effect, accuracy and precision of different types of explosive weapons and it has pledged to share the results of this research and analysis in 2017.
The second pledge is under Core responsibility 4 “Changing people’s lives: from delivering aid to ending need.” Empowering local actors and increasing national capacities for risk analysis is an ongoing priority for the GICHD. Providing capacity support on the request of national partners fulfills our mandate to act “as local as possible, as international as necessary” while also promoting national ownership.
Finally, the GICHD will associate itself with the Global Alliance for Humanitarian innovation, which affirms that humanitarian solutions can be promoted through innovative tools, approaches and partnerships. The Centre has committed to promote lessons learnt, good practices and evidence-based innovation from mine action through this Alliance. Some initiatives that the GICHD is currently working on in this domain include mobile technology, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and the SMART dogs harness.
