Strategies, Performance and Impact

Åsa Massleberg joined GICHD as an Advisor in March 2011, with an initial focus on linking mine action and development, and transition processes to national ownership. Since 2014, Åsa has focused increasingly on supporting explosive ordnance (EO)-affected and donor countries with developing, implementing and reviewing their mine action strategies. As a Programme Manager and Senior Advisor for the Strategic Planning Programme, Åsa’s main responsibilities include leading and planning GICHD’s strategic planning involvement in the global mine action sector and support to donor and EO-affected countries.

Åsa started working in the mine action sector in 2007 when she joined Mines Advisory Group’s South Sudan programme as its Community Liaison Manager. In this role, she was responsible for designing and implementing mine risk education, community liaison and survey activities. After MAG she worked with Swiss Campaign to Ban Landmines’ Gender and Mine Action Programme, with a focus on advocacy activities and training operators and EO-affected countries. In her pre-mine action life, Åsa worked with ICRC and UNHCR in Sierra Leone, and with development and human rights organisations in Nepal and South Africa. 

Åsa's academic background includes a MA in Humanitarian Assistance from Uppsala University, Sweden and a BA in International Relations and Development Studies from Sussex University, England.
