After decades of work clearing over 12,000 hectares of land and destroying more than one million landmines, Algeria declared itself free of anti-personnel landmines during the 20th International Meeting of National Programme Directors and United Nations Advisors.

The Convention entered into force in Algeria in 2002 and its clearance work formally started in 2004. It is the second North African nation to fulfill its mine clearance obligations under the Anti-personnel Mine Ban Convention and the 30th State Party.
