31 March 2014

One of the most important gatherings of the mine action sector, taking place from 31 March to 2 April in Geneva, is jointly organised by the United Nations Inter-Agency Coordination Group on Mine Action (IACG) and the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD). At the official opening, Ambassador Stefano Toscano, Director of GICHD, and Ms Agnès Marcaillou, Director of UNMAS, on behalf of the UN Inter-Agency Coordination Group on Mine Action, addressed about 300 participants on interlinkages between mine action and development and on the importance of monitoring and evaluation tools.

This annual meeting presents an opportunity for members of the mine action community to meet and to assess the progress and challenges within the sector. Participants include senior officials from mine action programmes, experts from United Nations departments and agencies, international non-governmental organisations, experts from donor governments and other mine action implementing partners.

The 2014 meeting focuses on the theme of “Monitoring, Measurability and Evaluation”, with plenary and breakout sessions exploring how these are taken into account in mine action policies, approaches, management, planning, reporting and operational considerations. Discussions will focus on the practical application and relevance of monitoring, measurability and evaluation to the respective daily concerns of participants.
